Basic Rules of Play
1. Serving Rules
- The serve must be underhand and made below the waist.
- The ball must be hit diagonally across the court into the opponent’s service box.
- The serve must clear the non-volley zone (also called the “kitchen”).
- Only one serve attempt is allowed, except in the case of a let (when the ball touches the net but still lands in the correct service box).
2. The Double Bounce Rule
- When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning it.
- The serving team must also let the return bounce before hitting it.
- After these two bounces, players may hit the ball out of the air (volley) or off a bounce.
3. The Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen)
- The non-volley zone extends 7 feet from the net on both sides.
- Players cannot volley (hit the ball out of the air) while standing in the kitchen.
- If a player steps into the kitchen while volleying, it is a fault.
4. Scoring and Winning the Game
- Pickleball is typically played to 11 points, but players must win by 2.
- Only the serving team can score points.
- If the serving team wins a rally, they earn a point and continue serving.
- If the receiving team wins a rally, they do not score but gain the serve.
5. Doubles vs. Singles Play
- In doubles, each player on a team gets a chance to serve before the serve switches to the opposing team.
- In singles, the server switches sides after each point they win.
Common Faults in Pickleball
A fault results in a loss of serve or a point for the opposing team. Common faults include:
- Hitting the ball out of bounds.
- Volleying in the kitchen.
- Not following the double bounce rule.
- Failing to clear the net on a serve or return.
